Wichita Autism Support Project

We had our meeting with the school on Wednesday 15th February as I indicated in my last article and the principle and vice principle made all sorts of good noises indicating that they want to work with us to get Conner the help he requires, while promising to attend an evaluation for Conner with the SCDDO on Thursday 23rd February. But the evaluation was a washout because the school failed to send someone to the meeting despite their promises to the contrary a week earlier.

Of course we went to the school and spoke with the principle and she claimed that they’d simply forgot to add the meeting to the school calendar. Which could be true, but given the general lack of response from the school district about performing a behavioural assessment in school makes me very sceptical!

Maybe I am just frustrated by the lack of progress, even with SCMH (case management), SCDDO, and Individual Advocacy fighting our corner, progress is painfully slow, a little faster than we can manage on our own but it’s likely that Conner will be in third grade before he gets any help, another new teacher, new classmates and new surroundings; which will make it even more difficult!

It just feels like we are being screwed around by the school district; we asked for a behaviour assessment to be done back in September 2011 and it still hasn’t been performed, five months later! The school district is failing kids because of stupid, petty bureaucracy dragging everything out much longer than it really needs to be.

We are still waiting for a call back from the USD259 special needs coordinator, which frankly; we have given up any hope of happening, that call was placed by my wife over two months ago. Is the only solution to move out of state to somewhere that has better infrastructure for kids with physical and mental special needs?

Respond to "The school system disappoints again!"
