Conner is having a good time at South Central Mental Health’s Odyssey Summer Camp and Miss Emily, his speech therapist at Heartspring, is saying that Conner can cut back to one session a week or even stop altogether! Things are going well but we don’t want to stop the speech therapy because we do not want any regression. What we need to work on the most is his socialization and empathy, I had the idea of equine therapy. Conner does not like anything that moves to much or too fast so I thought this might be good for him. He has ridden on a pony and a horse before and we had no issues whatsoever! I am hoping that this will teach him some empathy and maybe he can make a few friends in the process. Conner’s birthday is coming up and we will do the usual thing of going to my mother’s and have a little bit of cake and a lot of presents. It would be wonderful if he had a few friends to invite over to play and have cake. Sadly, our son has no friends what so ever and this does not bother him one bit. However, this does bother my husband and I a great deal! One of our hopes for this site is to get a small community together and maybe have play group for the kids and also, for the parents to meet and socialize a little ourselves. Hopefully one day that will happen but, until then any ideas that anyone has would be wonderful! 3 Responses to “Equine therapy?”Respond to "Equine therapy?" |

There are two places that provide hippotherapy in the area, Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding Center (Derby) and Prairie Meadows Therpeutic Riding Center in Goddard. We have been at both. My organization is also looking at putting together a “Horse Camp” next year.
You could also get him involved in the For the Love of Chance Center activities we do for kids with special needs. It would be a way for him to be around other kids in a supportive environment.

Thanks for the comment Lainie; we knew about Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding Center but their pricing is a little on the steep side; a minimum of $35 per session; but we’ll also check out Prairie Meadows.
We’d like to get Conner involved in some other groups; but he is very much a loner; all he cares about is computer games; or watching a TV program about computer games. Peaking his interest in anything non electronic is tough, but we keep trying to introduce him to new things in the hope he’ll be interested; maybe next year, we’ll see if we can get him interested in the Miracle League baseball, we’d love to have him involved in a team sport, somewhere he can make friends, he’s almost eight and still has no friends to speak of!
